The European Commission appoints Head of Representation in Italy

The Commission has appointed Lucio Battistotti as new Head of Representation in Rome, Italy. He took on his new duties on 1 September, 2009.

Representations are the official voice of the European Commission in the Member States. They are responsible for explaining policies of the European Union and making Europe more understandable to people.

They provide information about the EU through recognised outlets such as public libraries, business advice centres and education services.

Their responsibilities also include providing information to the Commission on orientations and trends of public opinion in the country concerned.

Lucio Battistotti has recently served as Head of Unit in DG Employment in charge of the management of the European Social Fund (ESF) in Spain, Denmark and Finland. He has also held several managerial positions in DG Employment being responsible for audit of the ESF in the EU Member States.

In 2001-2003 Mr Battistotti was an Acting Head of the EC Representation in Italy and before that he served for 5 years as Deputy Head of the Representation in Rome in charge of relations with the Regions and the Italian Parliament, EURO communication campaign and economic affairs.

He joined the Commission in 1983 and has held several senior positions in the DG Financial Control being in charge of audit of the EU Structural Funds. He has also served in the Cabinet of Commissioner Emma Bonino in 1995.

Mr Battistotti holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Padua. He contributed to a number of Italian publications on economics. He is also collaborating with the Master programme in European Integration of the University of Padua.
