New possibility to apply for GSP+

At the end of 2008 two countries, Nigeria and Gabon, applied to the EU for entry into the EU GSP+ scheme of trade preferences, but were refused - a case of double standards. For Nigeria and Gabon GSP+ would mean a significant improvement on their current trade relation with the EU, and as such an interesting (at least temporary) alternative for the EPA.

There is a new possiblility for these countries, and others as well, to apply for GSP+. The EU has now published an "Information Note for countries wishing to apply". It clarifies that there is "a possibility to submit by 30 April 2010 a request to be granted the GSP+ as from 1 July 2010. This Notice provides procedural guidance and instructions for GSP beneficiary countries, as defined in the Regulation, interested in submitting requests by 30 April 2010."
