Hegoa

Hegoa (INSTITUTO DE ESTUDIOS SOBRE DESARROLLO Y COOPERACIÓN INTERNACIONAL) is a No Profit Association that was founded in September 1987 and started its activity the same year

It works in the following areas:

  • Documentation Centre. The Hegoa Documentation Centre has a sita aim to build and spread a fund specialised in development and international cooperation. It has a digital and traditional library with more than 16.000 titles structured in 8 main themes, classified and controlled through a Thesaurus with 1.100 keywords that help to facilitate the research.
  • Training. Hegoa offers 2 official titles: First degree Master in Globalisation and Development and First Degree Master in Development and International Cooperation. It also offers a 2006-2007 on line MSc in Immigration and Development Cooperation in the European Union and 2006-2007 on line MSc on Strategies, actors and policies of Development Cooperation. It also offers ART and UNIFEM grants.
  • The path in the realisation of joined Investigation Projects of the members of the investigation area of Hegoa allowed its recent recognition as Investigation Group of the University of the Basque Region (UPV-EHU), with the definition of Investigation Group on Human Safety and Local Human Development.
  • Consultancy. Hegoa offers technical assistance for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of cooperation projects and the evaluation and selection of proposals for applications in the cooperation field. At present, Hegoa works with Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Araba administrations, BBK, Municipalities of Santander, Getxo, Tolosa, Irún Ordizia y Eibar among others. It worked for the European Commission (ECHO; General Direction for Development), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs-AECI (Spanish Agency for International Cooperation), the Direction of Development Cooperation and the Direction of Immigration of the Basque Government, Municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Pamplona and Mondragón. Moreover, it manages human resources training courses for the planning, management and evaluation development programs.
  • Awareness raising. Spreading within society of the themes of development and cooperation aimed at raising critical awareness and favour social mobilisation. For this purpose it organises public meetings, speeches and conferences; it gives courses, seminars and produces informative publishing. At present, together with ACSUR-Las Segovias it is developing the Project Gender in Development Education: North- South Debate Themes for Women Political Agenda (2007-2008).
  • Development education. Since 1998 Hegoa has realised several projects in this field, considered a privileged tool to act both on the values and personal and collective behaviours and on the building of a critical knowledge of reality. It fosters the training and sensitization of teachers and educators as well as the implementation of programs to work in education centres and the elaboration of material, teaching tools and guides. At present two projects are being implemented: 1. Investigation, Debates and Experiences on the Education to Global Citizenship, that proposes an investigation, seminars, conferences and teaching guides, and 2. Training in Development Education for Informal Education. 30 educators from different countries participate to this program, organised by the consortium Polygone together with CIDAC (Portugal); ITECO (Belgium) and HEGOA (Basque Region).
