Amici dei Popoli is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) acknowledged as being suited to the planning and organisation of humanitarian development projects by the EU (since 1978) and the Italian Foreign Office (since 1987).
It started its activities in 1974 (with the name of “AMICI DEL RWANDA”). To the current day, Amici dei Popoli has worked in 11 countries and concluded more than 60 projects.
Development projects in the Southern hemisphere
Since its foundation, Amici dei Popoli has promoted actions for the creation of structures destined to public use, to population training and welfare – of the young people in particular – and to support basic healthcare facilities.
The humanitarian development projects implemented by Amici dei Popoli therefore focus on young people, offering them literacy, education and vocational training courses and also projects for the recovery and family, scholastic and professional reintroduction of homeless children. Amici dei Popoli is currently operative in Rwanda, Burundi, Dem. Republic of Congo, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Uruguay and Argentina.
Development education in the Northern hemisphere
The development education activities aim to train people and involve them in a lifestyle that is coherent with a commitment to promote human development. These activities consist in:
- Choice and formation of the volunteers
- Formation of the short-term staff
- Formation of the makers
- Permanent formation of the NGO members
- Information
- Organisation of events (congress, etc.)
These and other activities, aimed at a vaster education of consciences to world issues, interdependence, solidarity and the protection of minorities, environmental respect, and peace are the most efficacious contributions towards human development.
